Human Lactation II is the second of two lactation courses available at NDSCS. This is a hybrid course that will be offered online and in-person at the NDSCS-Fargo campus. This 3-credit semester class will provide students with entry-level skills needed to provide lactation support and care. Human Lactation II expands on topics that were covered in Human Lactation I. We will cover specialized topics that include, poor weight and growth, challenges breastfeeding a premature or special needs infant, complications that arise when the infant is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and breastfeeding multiples. This course will allow students to process and manage ethical concerns related to lactation, critically evaluate research studies, and promote advocating for policy changes that protect and support lactation in public and the workforce. Students will develop assessment techniques as well as communication and counseling skills through assignments utilizing case studies and visual resources. Human Lactation II will provide students with a foundation of evidenced-based knowledge and skills to help support and encourage breastfeeding families. The lactation education provided in Human Lactation I and Human Lactation II to meets the 95 hours of didactic requirements for those that are preparing to sit for the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners exam (IBLCE). Individuals that are interested in pursuing a career in lactation have 5 years to complete a clinical experience and take the certification exam upon completing the lactation education requirements.
