ENGL 225: Introduction to Film

Class Program
Credits 3
Component
LEC

This introductory course to film is intended to help students become more active, critical viewers of films and to be able to communicate this understanding in writing. Movies, like works of literature, are texts that can be analyzed and interpreted; this process adds to our understanding and enjoyment. Students will view several films from different time periods, genres, and artistic approaches, and they will learn about narrative and stylistic elements used by filmmakers. Students will study the films themselves, but also the writing and research that goes along with them. With this, students will be able to read through a screenplay of a number of films and genres while understanding screenwriting terminology, focus, and details of why writers choose to write in this medium.
