ASC 60: English Language & Grammar Skills

Credits 1
This course teaches grammar, punctuation, mechanics, spelling, and vocabulary based on individual needs. Emphasis is on grammar and usage in sentence structure. Upon recommendation of the instructor, this course may be repeated for additional credit. (F, S, Su)

ASC 67: English As A Second Language

Credits 1
This course helps students who speak English as a second language or other language to communicate more effectively in academic and daily life. Areas of study include emphasis on speaking and listening. Upon recommendation of the instructor, this course may be repeated for additional credit. (F, S, Su)

ASC 82: Effective Reading

Credits 2
Introduces strategies for developing college level reading skills with emphasis on improving reading efficiency by building vocabulary and improving basic reading and study skills. (F, S, Su, O)

ASC 84: Critical Reading

Credits 2
Develops critical reading comprehension and thinking skills through interpretation of selected reading materials and by building vocabulary. Includes distinguishing between fact and opinion, drawing inferences and conclusions, analyzing the organization of material, and seeing relationships. (F, S, Su, O)

ASC 85: English of Foundations

Credits 3

English Foundations is a college prep course designed to improve students' reading and writing skills simultaneously. The course begins with a focus on the fundamentals of writing and reading, such as building vocabulary, crafting clear sentences, and understanding main ideas in paragraphs. The course then progresses to analyzing challenging real-world texts and producing well-supported, MLA formatted, research-based essays. This course serves as a transition to entry-level English composition courses.

ASC 88: Writing Skills

Credits 1

To provide supplemental and developmental instruction for students taking an English course. It is taken the same semesters as the English course. Instruction is based on student need with time allowed for application to the English assignments. This course may be repeated when additional English courses are taken.

ASC 90: Math Foundations

Credits 3

The course supports students in developing skills, strategies, and reasoning needed to succeed in mathematics, including communication and appropriate use of technology. Topics include the study of numeracy and the real number system; proportional reasoning, algebraic concepts, notation, and reasoning; quantitative relationships; probability, sets, interpreting tables and graphs; mathematical models; and problem solving.

ASC 91: Mathematics in Society Co-Requisite

Credits 1

This class is a co-requisite course for MATH 110, Mathematics in Society, which supports success through student-centered instruction. Topics to be covered are those prerequisite skills necessary to learn the content of MATH 110, such as numeracy, proportional reasoning, equations/formulas, graphs and skills for academic success. Corequisite: MATH 110.

ASC 92: Statistics Co-Req

Credits 1

A review of the core prerequisite skills, competencies, and concepts needed in statistics. Intended for students who are concurrently enrolled in MATH 210, Elementary Statistics. Topics include concepts from arithmetic, elementary algebra, and descriptive statistics that are needed to understand the basics of college-level statistics. Additional emphasis is placed on just in time skills and concepts.

ASC 93: College Algebra Co-Req

Credits 2

This class is a co-requisite course for MATH 103, College Algebra. This course is designed to support the content covered in MATH 103 by addressing prerequisite skills required for the topics in MATH 103. Topics include concepts from arithmetic and elementary and intermediate algebra. Additional emphasis is placed on just in time skills and concepts, solving and graphing linear equations and modeling with linear functions.

ASC 95: Trigonometry Corequisite

Credits 1

This course will review the core prerequisite skills, competencies, and concepts needed in trigonometry. Intended for students who are concurrently enrolled in MATH 105, Trigonometry. It includes topics such as angle measurements, trigonometric functions, identities, equations, and general applications. Additional emphasis is placed on just in time skills and concepts. This does not satisfy any graduation requirements. It is offered only through Academic Services. Corequisite: MATH 105.

ASC 99: Special Topics

Credits 1
A course designed to meet special departmental needs. Upon recommendation of the instructor, this course may be repeated for additional credit.

ASC 180: Prior Learning Assessment

Credits 1
This course is designed for the adult learner to assemble their knowledge from work experiences, leisure, independent study, etc. into a portfolio for faculty evaluation of potential college academic credits.

ASC 292: Experimental Course

Credits 1
A course designed to meet special departmental needs during new course development. It is used for one year after which time the course is assigned a different number.
